D-mannose is a natural simple sugar that appears to be a safe and practical alternative for treating UTIs caused by E. coli and other related bacteria ( Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Proteus, Klebsiella spp. ). The lining of the bladder is made up of polysaccharide molecules. The finger-like growths on the surface of E. coli bacteria that cause infection stick to these molecules. In the presence of D-mannose, they preferentially bind to D-mannose molecules, forming a complex that is eliminated during the next bowel movement.
