How to safely clean your dog's ears

Dogs have excellent hearing, but to keep it that way, it's important to properly care for your dog's ears.

Cleaning dogs' ears

We share 5 tips that will help ensure a safe and easy ear care and cleaning process.

Why is it necessary to clean ears?

Unlike humans, dogs' ear canals are L-shaped, so dirt accumulates much deeper than in humans. Cleaning their ears helps prevent redness, unpleasant inflammation, and bacterial and yeast infections after bathing.

When to clean?

  • If necessary, when you see that the dog starts scratching its ear, shaking its head, and the accumulation of sulfur is visible to the naked eye.
  • For a healthy pet, 1 ear cleaning per month is sufficient.
  • After swimming.
  • According to the recommendations of the veterinarian.

Ear cleaning products

When choosing an ear cleaner, it is important to choose a cleaner that does not contain alcohol, peroxide, or strong acids.

Recommended use: Otodine , Epi Otic III , Cleanaural .

These cleaners are suitable for sensitive ear skin and have a natural composition.

Only use sterile cotton pads or gauze, and do not use cotton swabs, as they can severely damage not only the dog's ear, but also its hearing.

How to clean your ears?

It is important that the dog is not distracted and is calm during ear cleaning.

1. Ear examination.

While your pet is calm, check their ears for redness or pus. If you notice any of these, be sure to contact your veterinarian and do not clean their ears at home. If you do not see any of the above changes in your pet's ears, then follow the steps below.

2. Putting a cleanser in the ear.

After taking and unscrewing the bottle of cleanser, gently place it near the ear canal, tilt it and, without pressing the bottle against the skin, pour enough cleanser into the ears to fill the ear canal.

3. Ear massage.

After applying the cleaner to the ears, massage the ear for 30 seconds to allow the product to work (you will hear a wet squishing sound as you massage your dog's ear during this process).

4. Cleaner outlet.

After massaging the ear for 30 seconds, let your dog shake his head to remove the cleanser and any dirt.

5. Cleaning the inside of the ear canal.

To remove any remaining cleaner and dirt, take a cotton swab and gently and slowly clean your dog's ear cup and visible ear canal. It is very important not to clean too deeply during this process, as this could damage the ear canal.

Finally, after cleaning the ears, don't forget to reward your pet with praise and their favorite treats so that the ear cleaning process remains as easy as possible in your dog's memory.
