How to care for a hamster

Although caring for a hamster is not difficult, it is necessary to know a few basic things to keep your hamster healthy, loved, and happy.

Hamster care

We share 5 tips to help you properly care for your hamster.

1. Choosing a cage.

We recommend choosing a larger cage for your hamster. Although it may seem that a smaller house would be more than enough for a hamster, it still needs more space to move around than we think. We also recommend not choosing round houses. It is best to choose a horizontal cage with several levels, stairs and hiding places so that the little pet has something to do and something to occupy itself with while the owners are not at home. Line the bottom of the cage with a non-dusty litter, for example, paper or wood fiber-based.

2. Balanced diet.

Rodents are omnivores, so it is important to ensure that the diet includes both dry food and fresh vegetables - carrots, cucumbers, broccoli. Special hanging water bottles are perfect for adding drinking water. Although hamsters are omnivores, do not give the rodent any sweets or fatty foods.;

3. Activity and activities.

Movement is an important part of a rodent's life. The cage should have places to hide, climb, run, and do things. Don't forget a running wheel, toys, and tunnels or hammocks for exercise. If possible, let your hamster run outside of its cage, and use a special running ball for safety.

4. Cage maintenance.

It is essential to keep the cage clean regularly, including food bowls, water bottles and toys. When changing the litter, it is important to remove not only the pet's excrement, but also any stray grains or other food from the bowl. Provide your rodent with a clean and pleasant environment to live in.

5. Communication and attentiveness.

Most rodents are social, but each individual and their personality can be different. Let them get used to your scent, speak softly, and take your time petting or picking them up. Some rodents (such as degus or rats) are very social, while others may be a bit more reserved.
